Timeline
1848- Approximately 4000 Germans leave Germany because of political upheaval that sweeps through Central Europe.
1850- Less than 4,000 Italians were reportedly in the U.S.
1880- Merely four years after the influx of Italian immigrants migrated, the population skyrocketed to 44,000.
1892- The INS opens an immigration screening station.
1917- The Immigration Act of 1917 not only expanded the classes of foreigners excluded from the U.S., but created the Asiatic Barred Zone, a geographical region covering most of eastern Asia and the Pacific islands from which no immigrants were to be admitted into the U.S.
1920-The Chinese population in the U.S. fell to a lowly 62,000 people.
1921- A quota system, the maximum number of persons admitted into a nation, was first introduced in 1921, after World War II when increases in racism and the growth of segregation sentiment in the U.S. called for further restrictive immigration.

Immagration letter
12/10/09
Dear Uncle Sam,
Hey there, how is everything going back at home? I miss you all so very much and I just want you to know that I am doing great here in America. It is so beautiful here, one day I am going to have enough money to bring the rest of you here also, so we could be close like a family again.
Well my journey to America was not the best. But I will say it was worth it! It took us about 2 weeks to sail across the Atlantic ocean, and this ride was very drastic. There were times that the wind was blowing at such high rates, it kind of felt as if we were going to tip at times. Then we went through about 4 rainstorms! The rain was bad, everyone was soaked and very cold, but what could we do in the middle of the ocean. So lets look on the bright side, we all got to America safely.
When we arrived to Ellis Island it was a sudden rush of excitement that flew through me! First all I seen was the statue of liberty from a distance. Then next thing you know I am setting foot on Ellis Island ready to begin a new life here. While we were on the island we waited in long lines, waiting to be asked a bunch of questions and checked for any illnesses. It took a great while for this process to be done but once it was all done and we were on the boats heading to New York! That was the best of all! It was like “a gush of freedom just smacked me in the face.”
Now I am living my life here in America where I can be free. There are so many opportunities here and it is possible for anyone to become anything the want. Oh and THE FOOD is great! The people here are nice too, and there is a variety of ethnicities, cultures and religions in America. Almost everyone has respect and they don’t judge you here.
You would just love it here Uncle Sam, and I can’t wait to see you! I really hope you enjoy this letter. And I really look forward to hearing back from you. Well I have told you all about my trip to America and now how great things are here, so I am going to close this letter for now and I’ll talk to you soon!
Take care Uncle Sam,
Love Gabby
