Name: Esther Vazquez

Immigration Letter

My name is Esther Vazquez and I am 17 years old.
I am emigrating from Poland to America.
I am writing to my friend in Poland Eastern Europe.
January 8, 1920

The journey to America was dreams come true for most of us. We where on our way to see other family members that were in America already. The boat journey was long it lasted up to two weeks or even months. During the travel many storms hit at the sea people started getting sick before we even got to Ellis Island.
In the place where we were located in the boat was not in good conditions it was crowded too. This was just the beginning of entering America the dream land.

Being in Ellis Island was tough because a lot people couldn’t get pass the island in to New York or New Jersey and had to go back to their country. Some where sick and didn’t pass the medical exam. Others couldn’t because they didn’t have enough money because there was a law passed in 1909 that in order to enter America you had to have at least 20 dollars. Another problem that was going on was that you had to prove that you could illegally enter America. Inspectors rejected any immigrant with criminal record or those suspected of being indentured servants. It was not easy to enter America; Ellis Island was tougher than sealing on the boat.

When I was arriving to America it was a happy, exited moment. Finally I had made it into America to find a better future. Not only for me but for my family so that I would bring them to America also. I started working right away I use my talents to start with. But as I went on it got better and better and everything went well so that I could bring my family. This has been a long, an experience of a journey but it has paid off at the end.

Sincerely,
Esther Vazquez

German U-Boats
Who?
What? A technical info covering all the U-boat types, ranging from the smallest coastal boats to the huge supply and mine vessels. They are military submarines operated by Germany particularly in World War 1 used for battle on sea.
When?
Where? The u- boats fought covers both combat areas and special missions in WW1.
How?
Why? Although in theory, U-boats could have been useful fleet weapons against enemy naval warships, in practice they were most effectively used in an economic-warfare role, forcing naval blockade enemy hipping.

•PANCHO VILLA: Real name was Doroteo Arango. While he was a fugitive he joined Francisco Madero’s successful uprising against the Mexican dictator, Porfirio Diaz.
Villa almost died or got executed so he fled to America for quite a while but then came back and formed his own military force known as Division del Norte (Division of the North). For a number of years he got involved in some problems with other Mexican military groups an eventually ended up fighting the U.S. troops from 1916-1917. Finally Villa reached an agreement with the Mexican leader who pardoned his action in exchange for Villa putting an end to his independent military activities.

•PROPAGANDA: Propaganda is a poster that mainly tries to influence the emotions, attitudes opinions, and actions. Propaganda was mainly used to influence armies to go against there enemy and/or to make sure that everyone though in the same way that their government did during World War 1.

•SUSSEX PLEDGE: The Sussex pledge was a promise from the German government to the U.S.A. on May 4th 1916 in response to U.S. demands relating to the conduct of World War 1. On March 24, 1916 a German ship in the English Channel attacked a ship in which they thought that it was a mine laying ship but it really was a French passenger called “The Sussex” although the ship didn’t sink it still killed fifty people and several Americans were injured. Although Germany didn’t want to be enemies of America or be they decided to make a Sussex pledge that didn’t last very long, later on Germany noticed or found out that they could beat Britain in a submarine warfare before America could fully join the war. These German actions affected America and they went to war with Germany. Issued April 6,1917.

The topic that caused the US to enter WWI was the Sussex Pledge because Germany attacked the Sussex without warning and if they kept it up the us would have to break diplomatic amunities and the US would join the war.

Pancho villa
Who? José Doroteo Arango Arámbula better known as Pancho Villa

What? Bron 5 June

Where? San Juan del Río, Durango, Mexico

When? 1878 – 20 July 1923

Why? Villa was also provisional Governor of Chihuahua in 1913 and 1914. Although he was prevented from being accepted into the "panteón" of national heroes until some 20 years after his death, today his memory is honored by Mexicans, Americans and many people around the world

How? In addition, numerous streets and neighborhoods in Mexico are named in his honor.

Lusitania was built by John Brown & Co. of Clydebank and was launched in 1906. The first British four-stacker, Lusitania was also the world's first quadruple screw steamer and the first ship to exceed 30,000 tons. Substantial modifications were made to the Liverpool Landing Stage to accommodate her great size. Lusitania made her maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York on 7 September 1907. She was at that time the largest ship in the world, a distinction she would hold until her sister Mauretania entered service two months later.

Jeannette Pickering Rankin (June 11, 1880 – May 18, 1973) was the first woman to be elected to the United States House of Representatives and the first female member of the Congress sometimes referred to as the Lady of the House. A lifelong pacifist, she voted against the entry of the United States into both World War I and World War II, the only member of Congress to vote against the latter. To date, she is the only woman to be elected to Congress from Montana.
