world war 1 was the first world war which was the great war and the ending war. it happened from 1914-1919 and more than 9 million people died on the battlefield.

Immigration Essay
There were many hardships that immigrants faced on their journey to America. When they arrive to Ellis Island they faced hardships such as diseases, name change, and the most important, finding jobs/work.
People that migrated to Ellis Island lived in very cramped, dirty and unsanitary conditions. People were poor and couldn’t afford healthy lifestyle. This all lead to some serious diseases being passed around. Diseases such as trachoma, lice, eye/skin diseases and even tuberculosis, were looked for as immigrants come to Ellis Island.
Millions of people that migrated to Ellis Island had their names changed. The reason for this was that some of the immigrants had very odd names. That in some conditions they were hard for Americans to pronounce. Half the people from Polin whose surname was Toman, used their surname, while the other half used the Americanized name Thomas. Some have found different branches of their family tree using different spellings or sometimes you might find a whole different surname.
There was very little work and jobs available for immigrants coming to America. Many people went to live with family members, while others had to live the hard way. A lot of the immigrants stayed in the northern parts of America. They stayed in the north specifically because it was industrialized and there was a lot of work that becoming available very quickly. Poor immigrants lived in their own neighborhoods separated from the wealthy people. They didn’t have access to hospitals and many women gave birth with the help of a midwife. Most of the women that worked in the factories were paid far less then men, and they were kept from the more skilled areas. To add to all the unfair, cruel things that happened to women, they were also sexually harassed quite often in the factories.
Though there were so many hardships immigrants faced, they did a pretty good job at starting the new lives they wished for. To support yourself and family and maintain a healthy lifestyle, you need money. And order to have money you need to work. Which back in the 1800’s in America, work was barely any work to find. But all the hard working men and woman who came to Ellis Island, were strong enough to fight and survive in their hard times. This why I think that America is very unique compared to other countries. We have came from all over the world and created this great nation.
