1. Looking at the part of the chart that says REGION OF BIRTH OF FOREIGN BORN, what part of the world do most immigrants come from? 

2. Looking at the part of the chart that says LANGUAGE SPOKEN AT HOME, what is the estimate of people who speak Asian and Pacific Islander languages who speak English less than very well? 

3. Looking at the part of the chart that says ANCESTRY, what is the ancestory of most of the people in the census and which ancestry is the smallest number?

Immigration Pre-Assessment

Based on our discussion yesterday, please take out a piece of paper and answer these questions. 

Please describe a problem the US has with immigration today?  Is the government doing any to help this problem?  Is the government making it worse?  Is this problem bringing people closer together or is it making people take sides on the issue. 

I am looking for 2 things.
1.  What you think about immigration
2.  How you write so I know where to start teaching writing with you.

ASSIGNMENT:
Today we are going to disucss attitudes about immigration as an introduction to this section of US History class. 

Please consider the following statements.  Do you agree with any?  Do you disagree with any?  Which ones?  Why?

1. There are too many immigrants coming to the United States.



2. The U.S. government should put more Immigration and Naturalization Service border patrol agents on the border with Mexico.


3. Illegal immigrants take away jobs from U.S. citizens.


4. U.S. immigration policy has been fair to all groups entering the U.S.


5. If a country is having economic problems, the U.S. should allow its residents to come here for a better life.


6. Immigration has helped the United States.


7. Having a variety of cultures and languages in America benefits everyone.


8. Most immigrants come to the U.S. just to get on welfare.


9. Everyone who comes to the U.S. should be required to learn English.


10. If a country is having political problems, the U.S. should allow persecuted citizens from this country to seek asylum here.

Tall Tales

CONTENT OBJECTIVE:

I can show my understanding of the Old West by writing a tall tale of my own.

LANGUAGE OBJECTIVE:

I can use proper grammar and conventions to write my tall tale.

Today you are going to use what you learned about Tall Tales yesterday to write your own.

Step 1:

Choose your historical fact.

Step 2:

Write your story about the historical fact using the characteristics of a tall tale.

Step 3:

Email it to Ms. G!

Discuss with your partner, what these tall tales might really be trying to say. Be prepared to tell the rest of the class what you think, in the last 15 minutes, because we will be having a discussion.
When you and your partner have come up with some ideas and you have some time, brainstorm an idea you have that you would like to write your own tall tale about.

What criteria does your tall tale have to have?

• needs to be based on a real event
• has to be sensational
• has to have a main character who does amazing things
• has to make the Old West look exciting to people reading your tall tale!
